Job Description

AFP's Anglophone State Department correspondent is responsible for coverage of US diplomacy and international affairs, a position that is based in Washington but includes extensive globe-trotting.

Working hand-in-hand with a French counterpart and with the White House, politics, eco and defense correspondents, the successful candidate will have broad experience and knowledge of global affairs, diplomacy, dominant world events and the many conflicts around the globe.

The position requires frequent travel with the Secretary of State to destinations that could be as varied as Brussels and Pyongyang to Luanda or the Arctic. These trips can last as long as a week or more and are physically challenging, often involving stops in multiple countries in a single day, with multiple briefings that can occur late at night. The trips are usually rotated between the two correspondents.

While in Washington, the job demands dynamic and enterprising coverage both of State Department events and of the main international stories of the day.

It requires long-term source building within the State Department and those Congressional committees dealing with foreign affairs, with foreign diplomats in Washington as well as among the many experts in the field in Washington and around the United States.

You must be able to write lively and well-turned copy rapidly and to be able to boil down complex diplomatic, political or geo-strategic issues into concise and compelling news stories, incorporating historical, analytical and strategic context. It's one of the most competitive beats in Washington so speed is also vital.

The coverage touches on a broad range of topics, from diplomacy and national security to the environment, trade and the economy and the State Department correspondents also work closely with the White House, political, defense/security and economics correspondents on major issues that cross over multiple beats, which is often the case with Trump administration policies and actions.

The daily work in Washington includes coverage of the midday State Department briefing, which routinely yields stories on several different topics. But it also includes regular press conferences, speeches by visiting dignitaries, Congressional hearings and events at Washington think tanks.

AFP has two desks in the State Department press room alongside AP, Reuters, US television networks and correspondents of major US newspapers and our correspondents are active, visible and well-recognized within the State press corps.

It is essential that the candidate be adaptable, polyvalent, frequently available out of hours and be able to write in a clear, lively and accessible way that allows audiences across the world to easily understand what has happened and what it means for the United States and its international partners and foes.

You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the Agency's guidelines on social media activity.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping fact-checkers in the network and ensure you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism.

As a general rule, you will ensure the reliability of news covered and commit to respecting AFP's ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and the AFP Stylebook.

Preferred Experience

You must demonstrate a high quality of writing, ensure the accuracy of their reporting and respect the agency’s editorial policies. They should bring a multi-media approach to the job and coordinate closely with the photo, video and graphics departments.

Ability to work under pressure and be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary.

Excellent French, since the two correspondents frequently translate each other’s stories, and a solid background covering international affairs and diplomatic issues.

Recruitment Process

Your application will be reviewed by the North America Editor-in-chief, the North America Regional Director and the HR Manager. You will be contacted for a Teams interview if your application is pre-selected.
